Jefferson City Housing Struggles: Social Service Agencies Point of View
Today, members of the Capital City Housing Task Force (River City Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Susan Cook-Williams, Angela Hirsch, Director of RACS, Tina Mollenkamp, Director of Common Ground and Brian Vogeler, Shelter Director for the Salvation Army) sat down to discuss the housing struggles in our town. We discussed the myth that there is "plenty of housing" in our community, what our clients are facing as they search for housing and where we go from here.

Formed after the 2019 tornado that raged through our town, the Capital City Housing Task Force knows that throughout our town and our nation, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find safe, affordable housing. So in 2021, River City Habitat for Humanity applied and received a grant from MO Department of Social Service's Money Follows the Person program. Our goal is to identify the roadblocks that keep low-income individuals from accessing housing in Jefferson City and then work on solutions to those roadblocks.
Our members include representatives from River City Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Common Ground, United Way, Central MO Community Action, Building Community Bridges, Samaritan Center, MO Inclusive Housing, Transformational Housing and more.

About Us
Susan Cook, Executive Director of River City Habitat for Humanity
"It is becoming harder and harder for families to afford the basic necessities of life. They are making difficult choices on whether to put food on the table at night or pay for the roof over their heads. Something has to change, so we are starting with housing.
Because housing is the foundation of our city."
